Built for the plumbing trade

Tax sorted for, Norwich plumbers, without the jargon

Plumbing income rarely comes from one place. Domestic callouts, bathroom installs and boiler work billed direct to householders sit outside the Construction Industry Scheme. First and second fix subcontracting for a main contractor sits inside it, with 20 percent deducted from your labour before you are paid. Both belong on the same Self Assessment return, treated differently, and the way you separate them decides whether your return is correct and your refund is complete.
Norwich and the wider Norfolk area give the trade a distinct shape. A large part of the county sits off the mains gas grid, so oil fired heating, LPG and now heat pump installation make up a bigger share of local plumbing and heating work than they would in most cities. Add a large stock of older property in and around the city and long distances between rural jobs, and the cost side of a Norwich plumbing business looks different from the national picture, particularly on mileage and on specialist certification.
Hammer & Ledger Tax is based at 50 Princes Street in Ipswich and works with sole trader plumbers and small plumbing companies across Norwich and Norfolk. We know the trade: tools, van costs, mileage between jobs, materials on trade accounts, and the CIS statements that pile up in the glovebox. Bring us the paperwork and we will turn it into a correct return and, in most CIS cases, a refund.

Bookkeeping

Snap your receipts, we do the rest. Cloud bookkeeping that keeps CIS statements, fuel receipts and merchant invoices matched and filed as you go.
VAT for plumbers
Registration when you cross the threshold, the right scheme for how you work, the domestic reverse charge on CIS jobs, and a check on where a reduced rate may apply to qualifying energy saving installations.
Sole Trader to Ltd
Earning enough that a limited company might save you tax? We run the numbers on your actual figures rather than a rule of thumb, and handle formation and registration if it stacks up.

How do CIS refunds work for plumbers?

When you subcontract to a contractor on site work, they normally deduct 20 percent from the labour part of your invoices under the Construction Industry Scheme and pay it to HMRC on your behalf. Because that deduction ignores your expenses and personal allowance, many self employed plumbers have overpaid by the end of the tax year. Your Self Assessment return reconciles it, and any overpayment comes back as a refund.
Yes. Gas Safe, OFTEC or equivalent oil registration, and heat pump or unvented systems qualifications are all legitimate business costs, along with the renewal fees and the training needed to keep them current. Carrying several registrations is normal in Norfolk and all of them belong on your return.
CIS only applies to construction work you do for a contractor, not to work billed directly to homeowners. Both types of income go on the same Self Assessment return, but they are treated differently, so keeping the two streams clearly separated in your records matters.
A reduced rate can apply to certain qualifying energy saving installations in residential property, and the rules have changed more than once in recent years. It is worth checking the current position before you price the work rather than after the invoice has gone out.
Not in practice. Most clients send records by phone photo, email or WhatsApp and we handle everything remotely. We work with plumbers across Norwich and Norfolk, and the Ipswich office is there if you would rather meet face to face.
