Built for the electrical trade
Tax sorted for Norwich electricians, without the jargon
Electrical work splits into two tax positions and most electricians are in both. First and second fix for a main contractor sits inside the Construction Industry Scheme, so 20 percent comes off your labour before you are paid. A rewire, a consumer unit change or a fault callout billed direct to a homeowner does not. Both go on the same Self Assessment return and both are treated differently, which is why the way you record the two streams decides whether your refund is right.
Norwich gives the trade an unusually broad mix. The city has a very large stock of older and listed property, which keeps rewires, periodic inspection and careful first fix work steady, while the wider Norfolk catchment means many electricians cover long distances between jobs. East Anglia also has a substantial energy sector, and the supply chain around it has pulled a number of local electricians into contract and subcontract work quite different from domestic jobs, with its own invoicing arrangements and often its own CIS position.
Hammer & Ledger Tax works only with tradespeople. Our office is at 50 Princes Street in Ipswich and we look after electricians across Norwich and Norfolk. We know what your costs actually look like: test equipment and calibration, van stock, NICEIC or NAPIT scheme fees, certification software, and the mileage that mounts up covering a county this size.

Electricians ask us these a lot
How do CIS refunds work for electricians?
On site work for a contractor, 20 percent is deducted from the labour part of your invoices under the Construction Industry Scheme and paid to HMRC on your behalf. Because that deduction takes no account of your test equipment, van, materials or personal allowance, most self employed electricians have overpaid by the end of the tax year. The Self Assessment return reconciles it and the overpayment comes back as a refund.
I cover a big area. How should I handle mileage?
You can claim either the actual running costs of the van in proportion to business use, or the HMRC approved mileage rate per business mile. For an electrician covering Norfolk the difference between the two methods can be substantial, and once you choose a method for a vehicle you generally have to stick with it for that vehicle. It is worth working out properly rather than guessing.
Can I claim my NICEIC or NAPIT fees?
Yes. Competent person scheme membership, annual assessment fees and the certification software you need to issue test certificates are all legitimate business costs, as is training that keeps your qualifications current.
I do work for a contractor in the energy supply chain. Does CIS apply?
It depends on whether the work counts as construction operations and whether the business paying you is a contractor for CIS purposes. Some of this work falls inside the scheme and some does not, and the answer affects how you should be invoicing. We check the position rather than assuming it.
You are in Ipswich, not Norwich. Does that matter?
Not in practice. Records come in by phone photo, email or WhatsApp and everything is handled remotely. We work with electricians across Norwich and Norfolk, and the Ipswich office is there if you would rather meet in person.
