Accountants for Tradespeople UK
Built for the plumbing trade

Tax sorted for Ipswich plumbers, without the jargon

Plumbing work in Ipswich rarely looks the same two weeks running. One month you are on domestic callouts and bathroom installs around town, the next you are subcontracting first and second fix work on new build sites across Suffolk. That mix matters for your tax. Site work for a contractor usually sits inside the Construction Industry Scheme, with 20 percent deducted from your invoices before you are paid. Direct work for homeowners does not. Get that split wrong and you either overpay HMRC or file a return that comes back to bite you.

Hammer & Ledger Tax is based at 50 Princes Street in Ipswich town centre, a short walk from the station. We work with sole trader plumbers and small plumbing companies across Ipswich and Suffolk, and we know the trade: tools, van costs, mileage between jobs, materials bought on trade accounts, and the CIS statements that pile up in the glovebox. Bring us the paperwork and we will turn it into a correct return and, in most CIS cases, a refund.

Ipswich is Suffolk’s county town, and the local plumbing trade reflects a genuinely mixed market. New build estates such as the Ipswich Garden Suburb developments on the north side of town keep first and second fix subcontracting work steady, while the large stock of older housing across the wider IP postcode area keeps repair, maintenance and domestic install work busy year round. Whether your income leans toward site work, private jobs, or a shifting mix of both, we build your tax position around what your invoices actually show, not a generic template.

WHAT WE HANDLE

Accounting services for plumbers

Everything a self-employed plumber or small plumbing and heating business needs, under one roof.

CIS Refunds

If contractors deduct 20 percent from your invoices under the Construction Industry Scheme, there is a good chance HMRC owes you money once your expenses and personal allowance are factored in. We cross check every CIS statement against what was actually withheld and chase your refund through to your bank account.

Self Assessment

Your tax return prepared, checked with you in plain English and filed before the 31 January deadline, with every allowable expense claimed correctly. We also flag ahead of time if a payment on account is due, so nothing lands as a surprise

Bookkeeping

Snap your receipts, we do the rest. Cloud bookkeeping that keeps your records straight all year, so CIS statements, fuel receipts and materials invoices are matched and filed as you go, not sorted in a panic every January.
VAT for Plumbers
Registration when you cross the threshold, the right scheme for how you work, and the domestic reverse charge handled correctly on CIS jobs, so you are never left having charged a contractor VAT you should not have.
Sole Trader to Ltd
Earning enough that a limited company might save you tax? We run the numbers on your actual figures rather than a rule of thumb, and handle company formation and the HMRC and Companies House registration if it stacks up.
Payroll
Taking on an apprentice or a second pair of hands? We run PAYE payroll so your team is paid right and HMRC is kept happy, with pension auto enrolment set up correctly alongside it.

COMMON QUESTIONS

Plumbers ask us these a lot

How do CIS refunds work for plumbers?

When you subcontract to a contractor on site work, they normally deduct 20 percent from the labour part of your invoices under the Construction Industry Scheme and pay it to HMRC on your behalf. Because that deduction ignores your expenses and personal allowance, many self employed plumbers have overpaid by the end of the tax year. Your Self Assessment return reconciles it, and any overpayment comes back as a refund.

Typical claims include tools and equipment, van costs or mileage, materials not billed on to the customer, work clothing and PPE, public liability insurance, phone and software costs, and trade memberships. Which method suits you best, for example actual van costs versus HMRC mileage rates, depends on your situation.
CIS only applies to construction work you do for a contractor, not to work billed directly to homeowners. Both types of income go on the same Self Assessment return, but they are treated differently, so keeping the two streams clearly separated in your records matters.
It depends mostly on your profit level, your plans and how you take money out of the business. A limited company can save tax at higher profits but adds admin and costs. We run your actual numbers rather than guessing.

No. The office at 50 Princes Street is there if you want a face to face meeting, but most clients send records by phone photo, email or WhatsApp and we handle everything remotely. We work with plumbers across Ipswich and the wider Suffolk area.
