Built for the building trade

Tax sorted for, Colchester plumbers, without the jargon

Plumbing work rarely looks the same two weeks running. One month you are on domestic callouts and bathroom installs around town, the next you are subcontracting first and second fix on new build sites. That mix matters for your tax. Site work for a contractor usually sits inside the Construction Industry Scheme, with 20 percent deducted from your labour before you are paid. Direct work for homeowners does not. Get that split wrong and you either overpay HMRC or file a return that has to be corrected.
Colchester supports both sides of the trade. The older housing stock across the CO postcodes keeps repair, maintenance, bathroom and boiler work busy through the year, while development along the A12 corridor keeps subcontract first and second fix work available for those who want it. Boiler replacement and heat pump installation have also pulled a lot of plumbers into grant funded and manufacturer backed schemes, which brings its own invoicing and VAT questions.
Hammer & Ledger Tax is based at 50 Princes Street in Ipswich, roughly eighteen miles up the A12, and we work with sole trader plumbers and small plumbing companies across Colchester and north Essex. We know the trade: tools, van costs, mileage between jobs, materials on trade accounts, and the CIS statements that pile up in the glovebox. Bring us the paperwork and we will turn it into a correct return and, in most CIS cases, a refund.

Plumbers ask us these a lot

How do CIS refunds work for plumbers?

When you subcontract to a contractor on site work, they normally deduct 20 percent from the labour part of your invoices under the Construction Industry Scheme and pay it to HMRC on your behalf. Because that deduction ignores your expenses and personal allowance, many self employed plumbers have overpaid by the end of the tax year. Your Self Assessment return reconciles it, and any overpayment comes back as a refund.

Typical claims include tools and equipment, van costs or mileage, materials not billed on to the customer, work clothing and PPE, public liability insurance, phone and software costs, and trade memberships such as Gas Safe. Which method suits you best, for example actual van costs versus HMRC mileage rates, depends on your situation.
CIS only applies to construction work you do for a contractor, not to work billed directly to homeowners. Both types of income go on the same Self Assessment return, but they are treated differently, so keeping the two streams clearly separated in your records matters.
A reduced rate can apply to certain qualifying energy saving installations in residential property, and the conditions change from time to time. It is worth checking the current position before you price the work rather than after the invoice has gone out.

No. Our office is in Ipswich, about eighteen miles away. Most clients send records by phone photo, email or WhatsApp and we handle everything remotely, though you are welcome to come in if you would rather meet face to face.
